For fans of strong women on screen, it is a golden era. As we mourn the passing from our screens of Homeland's Carrie Mathison and The Killing's Sarah Lund, along comes a batch of heroines in battledress.Specialized Cycling Tomorrow night, hermes handbags there is Sidse Babett Knudsen as Danish prime minister Birgitte Nyborg in the second series of the compelling Danish political drama Borgen,Castelli Cycling addressing her nation's troops in Afghanistan in a flak jacket and fatigues before getting caught in an insurgent attack. With her is the journalist Katrine Fonsmark , who has mutated from a blondely groomed TV anchor-Barbie into a hard-boiled, khaki-clad tabloid news reporter.

And here is Jessica Chastain, steely in Aviator shades, no-nonsense ponytail and desert gear, as Maya, the CIA operative who leads the hunt for and planned assassination of Osama bin Laden in Hurt Locker director Kathryn Bigelow's new film Zero Dark Thirty. Maya is based on a real-life figure who, when she and her team were given a service award for their action, sent an email to her bosses and colleagues explaining why some of them simply didn't deserve it. “She's not Miss Congeniality,” a male colleague told the Washington Post, “but that's not going to find Osama bin Laden.” Similarly in the film, when a senior figure undercuts her authority with a dismissive “who's she?”, Tough as Maya is, though, there are moments when the strain tells on her. “Just because she's trained to be unemotional and analytically precise doesn't mean she's unemotional,” Chastain said in a recent press conference, “and what I loved so much about the script is we do see moments where she falters.”

So women in the warzone are the new role models, getting the job done with less fuss and bluster than the men, and often despite carrying more baggage than the conventional masculine hero. What makes the new breed of fictional heroines so compelling is that they are not superhuman but assailed by real-life problems — bad temper,RadioShack CyclingSAXO BANK Cycling broken relationships, childcare issues and everyday sexism — which they surmount.

As so often in recent years, Carrie from Channel 4's Homeland was the trailblazer. Suffering from bipolar disorder, sexually erratic, and distrusted by her bosses as unreliable, Carrie's combination of intuition and tradecraft brought her closer than her colleagues to thwarting Abu Nazir's terror plot. She also rocked a headscarf in the field. But the archetype of the flawed, monomaniac female cop goes back at least as far as Prime Suspect's Jane Tennison.

Later this year the BBC delivers two more female cops in top-rank dramas: Gillian Anderson in The Fall, and Mad Men's Elisabeth Moss in Top of the Lake (the latter helmed by Jane Campion, one of the few women alongside Bigelow battling in the frontline of the institutionally sexist world of film directing). I don't doubt these shows will be good. But more remarkable, perhaps, will be Our Girl, also on the BBC. This stars winsome ex-EastEnders soap poppet Lacey Turner as a hairdresser who under joins the Royal Army Medical Corps and ends up in Afghanistan.

The decision to set the opening scenes of Borgen in a code-red military zone feels like a statement of intent. Nyborg may be able to address her soldiers as a wartime leader but she is facing divorce back home. Fonsmark the journalist, too, is still “having problems finding the balance between her private life and working life”, according to Hjort . This sentiment is echoed by Piv Bernth, the 56-year-old female producer of The Killing, who in 2011 became head of drama at DR, the Danish channel that makes both The Killing and Borgen. Nyborg strikes a chord, she believes, “because she showed that it was possible to be a woman and pursue an aim, [but] she was forced to choose between what she loved — her job — and who she loved — her family”. Bernth says that “the industry as a whole, especially in the US, has been slow to respond to female protagonists” but that Danish TV has had such a run of strong female leads (including some we haven't seen yet) that she is now keen to explore on screen “what the men have been doing while we were telling stories with the women”.

WHEN I read that Jean S. Harris had died, I immediately texted my friend Anita in Seattle to ask if she'd heard. How to put this? Anita and I were Jean Harris groupies back in 1981, when the 57-year-old former Madeira School headmistress went on trial for shooting to death her philandering lover of 14 years,Specialized Cycling the 69-year-old cardiologist and Scarsdale Diet guru Herman Tarnower. We got up at dawn one cold winter morning the week Ms. Harris was on the stand and drove to the small White Plains courthouse hoping to get seats in the courtroom. We didn't drive there in any official capacity. We were ordinary young New York working women. Divorced and never married, respectively. We were former English majors. We read. We knew a thing or two about bad love. We were in therapy. We were sixth in line.

Let me tell you this about 1980.RadioShack Cycling It was so long ago it was still the 1970s. The words “celebrity” and “diet doctor” had not yet been permanently linked.Garmin Cycling They did not appear in the ubiquitous rounded '70s typeface of “The Scarsdale Medical Diet,” the best seller that brought Dr.Castelli Cycling Tarnower a measure of fame before Ms. Harris left him bleeding to death on his bedroom floor. Anita and I had seen the movie “An Unmarried Woman.” We had watched Jill Clayburgh turn down the unturndownable Alan Bates, and left the theater intoxicated with a new form of female bravery. Yes, we thought. Let's try to be that kind of woman alone.

How to explain the gargantuan pull of this murder trial for so many people, so many of them female? It was a terrible accident. It was a coldhearted crime of vengeance. It was female rage turned inward (and then, in the nick of time, outward.) She got what she deserved. It was a sham of a defense. On and on it went.

Feminists, anti-feminists, former private-school students, women both of and not of a certain age weighed in on one side or another. Heroine? Victim? Could a “good” woman kill a “bad man” and expect any kind of justice? The trial was a flash point for that particular cultural moment (Second Wave Feminism looking for a second wind, “women who kill” a buzz phrase yet to be). Jean Harris was to female psychology as it pertained to toxic love as Bernhard Goetz, the subway vigilante, would become a few years later to personal defense as it related to soaring crime. (She got 15 to life. He served eight and a half months for illegal weapons possession and ran for mayor of New York.)

Inside the courthouse that day, we recognized media luminaries like Shana Alexander sitting directly behind the defendant, just as she had done in the “equally classy” Patty Hearst trial. The defendant herself, with her faded blond hair, blue eyes and good wool suit, was prettier in person, smaller and more fragile. The New York Daily News reporter Theo Wilson wrote that she took the stand looking as if she could not “pick up the wrong fork, much less a loaded gun.”

We read in Anthony Haden-Guest's coverage that some of her students at the Madeira School found her a “a cold fish.” But others noticed that she was “always a nervous wreck” and that “I've never seen a woman so ill-assured.”

In the photos we had seen of her emerging from the courthouse, she looked exhausted but chic, a soft fur wrapped around her neck, a glimpse of silk scarf underneath it, good earrings and pearls, wrist-length leather gloves, the teeniest of smiles. I was struck by the wave that formed high and to one side of her forehead, hinting at glamour but so well-behaved you couldn't help but imagine it loose.

The actual details of the murder scene never did become entirely clear, which is inconvenient and way too much like life for the audience of a juicy murder trial. Anita and I and everyone else did the best we could with what we were given. She had called Dr.hermes handbags Tarnower and begged him to let her come over. Dressed in tan slacks, a mink jacket and a headband, in some kind of (Tarnower-prescribed, as it turned out) antidepressant drug withdrawal, she tossed a .32 caliber revolver into the car and drove five hours from her Virginia home to the doctor's estate in Purchase, N.Y., intending to shoot herself at the side of the lovely duck pond.

He was in his bedroom, in his pajamas. When she spotted her (younger, blonder) rival's negligee, they argued. She pleaded with him to take the gun and kill her. He wrested it out of her hand. It went off. How he wound up with one bullet in his hand and three in his chest was an arithmetic Ms. Harris couldn't adequately explain to the jury of four men and eight women. They convicted her of murder in the second degree after eight days of deliberation.

By the time “Women Who Love Too Much” by Robin Norwood was published in 1985, Ms. Harris had served the first few years of her sentence in the Bedford Hills Correctional Facility in Westchester County, New York. She had turned her life to good purpose there, counseled fellow female prisoners on how to care for their infants and founded a nonprofit to provide tutoring for children of female prisoners.

Over the months that she had been front page news, we cringed when the writer Diana Trilling compared her to an unwritten Anna Karenina or Madame Bovary. (Ms. Trilling's sympathies shifted later.) Neither of us saw the accused as a tragic heroine. She was too peevish, too egocentric and lacking in self-awareness, qualities for which her dry wit and articulate presentation of herself didn't compensate. But we bristled when Betty Friedan and others dismissed Ms. Harris as a “pathetic masochist,” and chided us for putting Dr. Tarnower on trial.

  • The Meru GORE-TEX jacket is part of The North Face's Summit Series, built for seriously rugged pursuits.moncler jackets men So while its technical details are aimed for the needs of mountaineers and peak-baggers, the Meru jacket boasts plenty of perks for the slightly less ambitious snowshoer. Particularly those who fall into one of two categories: the perpetual water-logged resident of the Pacific Northwet or long-haul trekkers with a stormy agenda. But even the recreational showshoer will appreciate the hardworking technical performance found in the Meru, thanks to the relatively new GORE-TEX Active Shell construction.

The Active Shell laminate is ultra-thin and ultra-light for highly active sports. The entire jacket tips the scale at roughly 11 oz., but you won't feel robbed of any of GORE-TEX's signature features, like impermeable waterproofing or stellar breathability. (In a nutshell, tiny GORE-TEX pores in the jacket's membrane allow trapped heat vapors to escape but don't allow water or snow to enter.) So whether you're trapped in soggy conditions created by you or Mother Nature, the Meru shell does a dang good job of keeping you dry in the most critical situations as was demonstrated by a recent trip to rainy Seattle, as well as a half-day trek up Utah's Big Cottonwood Canyon.

Staying true to its design philosophy to accommodate big ascents and big packs, The North Face stripped the Meru of any non-essential details, like pit zips or media pockets, to save on weight. But if you're ditching your urban walk for the seclusion of a backcountry ‘shoe, those are traits you won't miss. The extra-large chest pockets are backpack-friendly meaning you access your goods by reaching across with your opposite hand. Sure, it's not entirely convenient for shoving your hands in your pockets, but its large capacity has the ability to store most of your biggest essentials within easy reach. Silicone shoulder grips are strategically used to keep your pack comfortably in place without shifting, and an extra-large storm hood is helmet compatible if you choose to, say, swap your snowshoes for skis on the descent.

In testing this jacket,Garmin Cycling it's worth noting that its alpine fit, which boasts a tapered cut, is surprisingly roomy. I tend to size up when it comes to hard shells, given the addition of a few, thick layers underneath, but it still left me with plenty of mobility to move my arms without constriction. The cut also sits lower, below the hips, for more weather coverage.

While The North Face Meru jacket may be suited for high alpine adventurists, its lightweight, waterproof and breathable construction is exactly what any snowshoer should seek in a technical shell. If your top priority is saving weight or staying dry in the face of wet weather, the Meru does both efficiently and effectively.

Interestingly, she says that TV production in Denmark is now largely female-dominated, but that bias in favour of one gender in any field is a bad thing. When I ask her if she thinks the world would be a better place with more female prime ministers, more women in combat zones, and more women commissioning TV drama she says: “No,Castelli Cycling I don't think so. I would like to, but no.” “Oh my God,Specialized Cycling yes, maybe,” she says. “There's an authoritative answer for you.” Spoken like true modern role models.

The recent cold temperatures have filled the beds in Johnson City's two emergency shelters to capacity. Cots have been set up to accommodate the overflow. And both shelters are making room for more as they encourage everyone who is sleeping outdoors to come inside.

Scott Blevins, director of the Salvation Army shelter, 200 Ash St., said the shelter has been at capacity, housing 108 men, women and children nightly since early last week.

The number includes 11 children who have been in the shelter for more than two weeks, and Blevins said five more children are expected this weekend, which will match the record high number of 16 children that were housed at the shelter earlier this month.

With overnight lows expected to drop into the teens by Sunday, Lainey Howard,Welcome to shop cheap hermes handbags outlet store . donor relations director for the Salvation Army, said, “We do not want anyone sleeping out in the cold. We want them to come inside.”

The white flag, which signals when overnight temperatures will be below freezing and no one will be turned away, is in place outside the shelter. Howard said the army is prepared “to do as much as we can for as many as we can.

“We can put more people on our couches or on cots in our hallways if we need to. Or we can help them find another place to stay,” she said. “Our shelter is an emergency shelter for people to come to when there is an emergency. And extreme cold is an emergency,” she said.

At the Haven of Mercy Rescue Mission, 123 W.Shop the latest christian louboutin boots handpicked by a global community of independent trendsetters and stylists. Millard St., approximately 50 men stayed in the shelter Wednesday night. Thomas Squires, who was working at the front desk on Thursday, said there was room for as many more who need it.

“We've always got room,” Squires said. The world centre of LIVESTRONG Cycling. “Our mission is to help people and to change people's lives and we're not going to turn anyone away at any time, no matter if it's cold or not.

“The past couple of nights have been pretty chilly. People who usually prefer to sleep outside have been coming in asking if they can spend the night with us. We put one cot out. But if it's really cold, we can put 30 or 40 cots in our dining room so we'll always have room.”

With more people coming to the shelters because of the cold, resources are in greater demand and donations to help meet the increased need are also being welcomed.

At the Salvation Army,Browse hundreds of beautiful discount gucci handbags and find the perfect fit for you! Blevins said the greatest need is for bedding — blankets, twin sheets, pillows and pillow cases, towels and baby supplies, including diapers of all sizes.

Howard said, “These are things that we share with other agencies that need them. We give them to people who are leaving the shelter and to people who come to our window and ask for them. We just go through them so fast, especially when the white flag is out.”

At the Haven of Mercy, Squires said blankets, towels and breakfast items, including milk and eggs, cereal, pancake mix and syrup,Where To Buy Canada Goose Online, our moncler jackets men Offer Canada Goose Coacts with Lowest Price. are the items most needed.

“We go strictly on donations and Food Lion and Kroger have been big supporters for us and really blessed us with meats,” he said. “We also had an outpouring of jackets this year and we have some coats left from Christmas if anyone is looking for a coat.”

Finally, Squire said, to those who are sleeping outside in camps around the city, “We want you to come in, especially when it gets cold, even if it's just to get some hot coffee and warm up.”

As a white man, I must say Victor Davis Hanson's Dec. 20 Forum column “Wasn't this to be the post-racial era?” is spectacular in its ignorance and offensiveness. Not a single serious black scholar has declared this a post-racial era. Another memorable year of sports is in the books and it couldn't have been any better. From Eli Manning guiding the New York Giants to a thrilling Super Bowl victory over the New England Patriots to the unprecedented Stanley Cup run from the Los Angeles Kings, this year left everyone talking.

But all of those feats just miss the list of the top sport stories of the year as we begin with history from Augusta National Golf Club.

1. London Olympics – For two weeks you raced home from work to see who won the gold in badminton. Only the Olympics could have that type of power. Michael Phelps retired from the sport of swimming as he after setting an Olympic record with 22 medals. Also, swimmer Missy Franklin won four gold medals and one bronze. Jamaican sprinter Usian Bolt won became the first man to defend his 100 and 200 meter titles. Lastly, gymnast Gabby Douglas became the first African-American woman to win the all-around Olympic gymnastic title.

2. Penn State Football Scandal – Happy Valley was never the same as former Penn State defensive coordinator Jerry Sandusky was convicted of 45 counts of child sex abuse and was sentenced to 30 to 60 years in prison. Former football head coach Joe Paterno died in January and the NCAA handed down Penn State a 4-year bowl ban.

3. Denver Broncos sign Peyton Manning, trade Tim Tebow to the Big Apple – In one of the biggest free agent signings in NFL history Peyton Manning chose to continue his playing career with the Denver Broncos. Soon after, the Broncos traded Tim Tebow to the New York Jets. As the start of the season began two questions persisted, would Manning ever return to his four-time MVP form and how well would the duo of Tebow and Mark Sanchez work together?

Well, Manning has guided his new teammates to a second consecutive AFC West title as he bids for a fifth MVP trophy, while Tebow has rarely played, becoming the league's most decorated punt protector.

4. Lance Armstrong Stripped of titles - The symbol of strength was stripped of his record-setting seven Tour de France titles by the U.S.Welcome to shop cheap hermes handbags outlet store . Anti-Doping Agency. Lance Armstrong was also barred for life from the sport of cycling.

On October 22 the International Cycling Union officially took away Armstrong's titles and banned him from the sport. UCI President Pat McQuiad said that Armstrong, "deserves to be forgotten."

5. LeBron's Magical Season – The player who took his talents to South Beach finally got his ring. LeBron James led the Miami Heat to the NBA Championship, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder in five games.

James also won his third league MVP, was NBA Finals MVP and won an Olympic gold medal with Team USA in the same year. The Men's Canada Goose Expedition Parka is the stylish choose for you're to wear when you are walk on the city streets.

6. Miguel Cabrera's Triple Crown – What could top three perfect games in one season? Only something that hasn't been accomplished since 1967 as Detroit Tigers outfielder Miguel Cabrera hit for the American League Triple Crown.Aquarium Canada Goose Yorkville Parka fish are a popular option for home . Cabrera led the AL in batting average (.330), home runs (44),Shop the latest christian louboutin boots handpicked by a global community of independent trendsetters and stylists. and RBI's (139). Not to mention that he also won the AL MVP over Los Angeles Angels outfielder Mike Trout.

But it was the one-team award that he couldn't capture that meant the most, as the San Francisco Giants swept Cabrera's Tigers in the World Series.

7. Bountygate Scandal - The NFL conducted an investigation on the New Orleans Saints from 2010 and found that coaches and players were involved in a bounty system that gave cash rewards for knocking out opponents out of games from 2009-2011. As a result, the league suspended Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely, head coach Sean Payton and linebacker Jonathon Vilma for the entire 2012 season. Three other players and two other Saints personnel suffered lower suspensions.

The players appealed the ruling and it wasn't settled until former NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue vacated all the player suspensions and fines levied by current league commissioner Roger Goodell.

8. Junior Seau's Death – On May 3, NFL legend Junior Seau was found dead inside his California home with a gunshot wound to his chest. His death was ruled a suicide and Seau's family donated some of his brain tissue for research to see if his football career contributed to his deadly act.

Seau's death brought more attention to the possible long-term effects of how repeated concussions can affect the brain.

9. College Football Approves Playoff Format - It was the move college football fans have been waiting for as a four-team playoff was approved. Beginning in 2014, a selection committee will choose the top four teams to be in the semifinals game, which will be played at current bowl site. The national championship game will be played a week later and the site of the game will be awarded to the highest bidder.

10. NFL's Replacement Referees – It was the play that shook the NFL, especially the Green Bay Packers. On the final play of the Packers matchup against the Seattle Seahawks on Monday Night Football, Seahawks quarterback Russell Wilson threw a Hail Mary pass into the end zone. The ball looked to be intercepted by Packers cornerback M.D. Jennings but it was given to Seahawks wide receiver Golden Tate when he reached around Jennings to put his hand on the ball out of desperation. The botched call from the referees was worse because one official signaled an interception, while the other called a touchdown for Seattle.

The result of the play forced NFL into settling its labor dispute with the regular officials who were back on the field for week four of the season.

11. Los Angeles Lakers land Dwight Howard and Steve Nash - The Los Angeles made the trade of the year in the NBA. All-Star center Dwight Howard was traded from the Orlando Magic to the Lakers, fellow center Andrew Bynum was shipped to the Philadelphia 76ers and Andre Iguodala was moved to the Denver Nuggets. The Lakers also acquired two-time MVP guard Steve Nash from the Phoenix Suns in a sign-and-trade.

12. Pat Summitt steps down from coaching ranks – Longtime Tennessee Volunteers coach Pat Summitt left Tennessee as head coach due to early-onset Alzheimer disease. A basketball legend, Summitt racked up eight national titles and won 1,098 games which are the most in major college basketball history.

13. NHL Lockout - For the fourth time since 1992 the NHL went into a lockout. One of the key positions on the bargaining table is that NHL owners want players to accept salary cuts and place limits on free agency.

The league has suspended all games through January 14.

14. Linsanity - Who knew a Harvard graduate could shake up Madison Square Garden so much? With the New York Knicks slumping with injuries to the point guard position, Jeremy Lin was inserted into the lineup. He would reel off 25 points and seven assists off the bench against the New Jersey Nets and "linsanity" took flight. Lin would lead the Knicks to seven straight wins taking New York by storm.

15. Augusta National Admits Women – For the first time in almost 80 years of its existence, women became members of the Augusta National Golf Club. Former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice and financer Darla Moore were the two chosen to wear wore the iconic green jackets. Augusta National is where the Masters Golf Tournament is held.

Schuylkill County's lawyers want everyone to have a merry Christmas, and they engaged in three projects this year to help achieve that goal.

As it has done since 1999,A shop chanel bags, often called a seat, is one of three contact points on an upright bicycle, the others being the pedals and the handlebars. the Schuylkill County Bar Association bought the Christmas tree set up in the courthouse for the holiday season.

The association also held its annual coat drive, donating 150 warm winter jackets to the Salvation Army Pottsville Corps, while the group's Women's Law Caucus donated about $2,600 in money and toys to area charities and its Young Lawyers Division gave $650 to the Schuylkill County Food Distribution Network.

Association members view these efforts as ways to give back to the community that has helped them prosper.

The groups the caucus helped this year included Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Schuylkill County Inc., Bridge House, Salvation Army, Schuylkill Community Action and Toys for Tots.

"It's a large effort," lawyer Ruth Snyder said.

Jason Schally of Schuylkill Community Action accepted the check from the Young Lawyers Division, saying the money will go to year-round food pantries that help people across the county.

"This will be used directly for the purchase of food," Schally said. "The need is dire."

He said the money will help an agency that is trying to do more with less.

"We're in dire need of private donations due to the diminishing state and federal support and increased demand for food assistance," Schally said.

He said 250 volunteers help the network find enough to feed people in all parts of the county.

Association President Sudhir R.A new addition to the Canada Goose Kensington Parka collection . Patel said the group has donated more than 1,000 coats since starting the drive.

"This is our fifth year," he said. "The coats are all going to the Salvation Army."

Cadet Stacy Ferraira, a Salvation Army seminary student, said the coats will help a lot of people.

"There is a need this year," she said while looking over the coats. "It seems to be greater than last year."

What we have here isn't a case of powerful men granting acceptance to a couple of women and uplifting them to a new level of social stature. What we have here is a couple of powerfully successful women uplifting a bunch of men to new stature – and granting them social amnesty.

It got uncomfortable again this year, as newly installed IBM CEO Ginni Rometty is a woman and CEOs of Masters sponsors usually get an invitation to be a member. Augusta National weathered the storm and, when it made its announcement Monday, did not include Rometty as one of the first two female members. Why? Because Augusta National doesn't want to be pressured by the money, and it's important to prove that it wasn't.

Over the last few years, Monticello Elementary School has collected quite a few coats, jackets, hats, sweaters, and hoodies from students just leaving them at school and not returning to pick them up. This winter, principal Tish Thomas and the AmeriCorps volunteers decided to put the items to good use by distributing them to the community.

“We have the items cleaned at Comet Cleaners here in town and ready to be picked up on Thursday afternoon in the school cafeteria,” Thomas said.

Thomas and five AmeriCorps volunteers were at the cafeteria Thursday to assist participants with item selection.

One little girl came in with her mother and little sister. The volunteers helped find several items the girl liked so she would be extra warm this winter.

“We haven't had a whole lot of people come by, but there have been people come by and get some things,” Thomas said.We invite you to experience choose bagsame for you.

The AmeriCorps volunteers beamed at the ability to help the little girl find cute, warm clothing through their efforts.

Thomas said this project is the AmeriCorps' community service project in observance of Martin Luther King Day, which is in January.

While there were a families to take advantage to the AmeriCorps efforts, there were a lot of items remaining.

“We will probably keep the hats because you never know when you'll need a hat for a kid,Aquarium Canada Goose Yorkville Parka fish are a popular option for home . but the jackets and other items with be given to charity,” Thomas said.

"I once took a painting of a snowstorm — printed with macaronis, mind you — and cut out a picture of Hudson with hat and gloves; glued it to the middle and wrote, 'the best part of my vacation was playing with you in the snow.' My aunt did love that one," Ulrich recalls. She also suggests incorporating sentiments of gratitude using speech bubbles added to those art projects previously made at school.

More often than not, your efforts will pay off. Elementary school teacher Susan Synden, of Ephrata, received an abundance of thank-you's recently after finishing a year of student-teaching a fifth-grade class. "Each child wrote on a list, 'Mrs. Synden's Favorite Things.' Then, they read it to me,Where To Buy Canada Goose Online, our burberry bags Offer Canada Goose Coacts with Lowest Price. one by one ..Best Quality But Low Price Canada Goose Whistler Parka By Dre hot sale online.. things like 'when we wear our warm jackets to recess,' basically it was everything I'd lectured them about, turned around with a positive spin." The kids each gave an office supply to her as well, and some got creative with their messages.

"One parent gave me highlighters, mega-bright nail polish, bright eye mascara, brilliant pink socks, anything that was beyond-bright, then the bag said, 'You were the highlight of my year.' "

Gratitude is linked to well-being, a decrease in anger and resilience, according to Webmd.com, a monitored health information website. Also, "a study suggests that gratitude in teens is linked to feeling good about life, being optimistic, and having a good social network," according to the website.

Best of all, it really doesn't matter what is given as the sign of gratitude, Synden adds. "The effort of doing something .Stay warm and in style during the winter moths with the Canada Goose Resolute Parka... makes one feel appreciated and, of course, appreciation feels great."
