At the entrance is a pale stone bower of equilateral arches and then a brass-plated door opens into a small vestibule and after a turn there is the Chamber. The golden Sovereign’s Throne: empty. Five rows of long benches, red leathered, are stacked on either side. Above, between sets of bar-traced windows, bronze statues of chain-mailed knights hold broadswords and maces. Some of their faces are cast downward as if watching the proceedings below.

From my seat in the guest area, near the entrance, I could see the Labour peers to the right of the throne and the backs of the Crossbench peers and then the rows of the Conservative opposition. A bewigged secretary bent over a desk in the centre of the room. He was browsing Wikipedia on a desktop computer.

When the House is in session the Peers of the Realm come and go intermittently. One made his way from the low wooden gate to a nearby bench, a hand on his walking stick and the other on the railing. His nose dripped, untended. He then drifted into sleep while Lord Bach announced that,Great discounts on our huge range of Castelli Cycling clothing .Welcome to RadioShack Cycling jersey online! ‘the Government does not support or approve of polygamous marriage’. There had been a question tabled by a Baroness concerned about the rights of Muslim women.

The House often sits late into the evening, rising at ten or eleven at night. It’s a strange thought, the upper chamber lit softly by pendulum lights while the Peers lounge opposite one another, holding forth on polygamy, after the Thames outside is moon white and quiet.

That afternoon was my first glimpse of the House of Lords in session, the first time I saw the Chamber, the wood and brass carvings so intricate and detailed it was as if the room itself was a slot for a giant pin-tumbler key. A former Captain in the 101st Airborne Division of the US Army, I was now a speechwriter for one of the noble lords though I was beginning to fear I lacked the required stamina. Climate change and the Homeowner Mortgage Support Scheme and then the turmoil of the Scottish banks were debated for over two hours. When Lord Tunnicliffe rose to repeat a Statement on Armed Forces: Reserves first made in the Other Place, I began taking notes, but it wasn’t long before my attention wandered again. My eye was drawn upward to the eighteen knights, armour clad, dispassionate, their weapons lowered or resting on their shoulders. They are life-size, almost shrunken.

The statues in the chamber have been the topic of much debate. In 1850 Lord Osborne said that, ‘such narrow shouldered barons would never have wrung the Magna Carta from the crown’. These icons represent the original signatories and Lord Osborne wanted them to appear more imposing and fearsome. In a similar way, I expected the Peers themselves would be larger than life somehow. One of the Lords I met had been shot by a German machine gun in the Second World War.We work with all Garmin Cycling computers. I was so nervous when I shook his hand that I’m unable to remember his name. Above his breast pocket, on his suit jacket, were loops of black thread used for holding his medals, which seemed to weigh him down. He was bent, unable to stand up straight.

There was something stooped about Lord M as well. We’d first met in the Peers’ Guest Room, a wood-panelled salon with bay windows that face the Thames. Oil paintings of naval battles hung on the walls. He was slouched on a wooden bench, his double-breasted jacket undone and his pocket square halved in a soft triangle. I expected him to be aloof and superior, an Eton educated hereditary Peer quoting Latin epigrams and complaining at large. Instead he listened with an almost embarrassing intensity as I discussed a recent article on the Territorial Army. After Eton he had volunteered to serve in the Household Cavalry rather than attend University.

He had been in Malaysia and Northern Ireland though with a British manner given to understatement, he made light of his experience. ‘It wasn’t like Iraq,’ he said, and went on to describe his time in Northern Ireland as hours of waiting about and setting up checkpoints. He said that his father’s parting advice before he left for Sandhurst was, ‘the whole thing will be ghastly, just stick it.’

‘Did your father talk very much about his service?’ I asked.

‘He was in Palestine with the Guards when the unit was mechanised. The order came down to kill their horses and he said that was the worst moment of his career. Many of the men took it badly and couldn’t do it themselves. They were brought to the desert and he said the horses knew. They knew what was coming.’

It was an anecdote that haunted me. Later, I tracked it down in the library and found a reference in Jane Wellesley’s Wellington: A Family History. Her father Valerian, also an officer in the Household Cavalry at the time, said: I had to take fourteen old black horses of my troop into the Judean hills and shoot them… those fine old creatures who had taken part in all the great state occasions of the last ten years, including the 1936 coronation,Erik's Bike Shop is proud to carry Specialized Cycling, gear and apparel. ended their days on a desolate Palestinian hill, as fodder for the vultures and jackals.

But I kept seeing things in the Palace of Westminster that reminded me of military life. Sand from the Normandy beaches is enshrined in the Royal Gallery. Standing in line for lunch, with a plastic tray in my hand, I noticed the glass cases outside the Terrace Cafeteria are filled with medals from British military history. The most recent is the Elizabeth Cross, given to the next of kin of slain Armed Forces personnel.

General Motors skated through the 1980s by putting out some extremely questionable vehicles. Arguably at the height of their institutional arrogance, GM produced cars that were plagued with shoddy build quality and uninspiring performance. Few of them are considered ultra-desirable classics today.

There is one giant exception to this, and it has but three letters in its name: GNX. The General got that one very, very right.Find Christian Louboutin Women Shoes deals and save. Essentially a Buick Regal Grand National with a huge turbocharged V6 engine and an astronomical amount of horsepower and torque, the GNX was capable of the zero to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds, making it both a tire-shredder and a giant killer. And it looks mean as fuck, too.

If you've ever seriously lusted after one, consider this very cherry GNX that popped up on eBay with a mere 8,062 miles on the odometer. The seller says it's a pampered model with original paint and factory tires (perhaps the only original GNX tires in history that haven't been murdered), and it comes with full paperwork and a sexy GNX jacket. Wear that thing to the club and you'll have to beat women and/or men back with a baseball bat, probably.

It's worth a click to the auction site just to see what a 1980s Buick looks like today when it's essentially in new condition. I hope this turbo monster finds a good home. Any takers out there?

Oh dear.Find authentic Gucci Shoes in many styles and colors. I don't quite know what to say to you, because I realise that you are already agonising over your disappointing sales, which were worse than expected over Christmas. I feel like someone disloyally bad-mouthing an old lover: after all, I have loved you dearly since childhood.

I suppose I was indoctrinated by my mother, who always used to look chic and elegant, and adored shocking her smartest friends by revealing that her beautifully cut suits and cocktail dresses were bought in cheap-and-cheerful Marks & Spencer. I inherited Mum's admiration for your fabulous exchange policy and your well-trained,Can any one tell if this is a authentic north face jackets? courteous staff. So much so that, a few years ago, before Sir Stuart Rose performed his miracle cure, I became so incensed by rude journalists who implied that you were in terminal decline that I purchased a few of your shares, the only shares I have ever bought. And I still have them. Because I'm loyal.

Which is why I wandered into one of your big stores – in the Brent Cross shopping centre in North London – last week. I admit I have been put off by your current advertising where odd-looking “ordinary” models jump around in odd-looking clothes. Where is Twiggy? Where is Myleene Klass? Where is Shirley Bassey? Why have you given up your starry aspirations? You aren't Primark or Zara. You used to be up there with John Lewis: one of the great, caring British institutions whose aim is quality and value.

John Lewis is as good as ever, never knowingly undersold, staffed by caring assistants known as “partners” who know their stock and how to guide you. No wonder they are bucking the recession, selling more than ever. But when I walked into M&S, I felt as if I was in a warehouse. Nothing I saw seemed to go with anything else, and in the warehouse there were certainly no caring assistants to guide me.

There was a time when the store would be filled with pictures of models wearing pieces together, so tempting that I found myself buying the whole outfit – jacket, dress and scarf – to try to emulate the model. I needed a total look, something good both on the train or at the conference. My work these days usually involves presenting or lecturing, so it must be something that doesn't crumple. Ideally it should be something classy. Something structured. Something to make me look as chic as my mum always did.

The sight of the horrors hanging by the main entrance almost put me off going any further. Who wears such terrible prints? Even on the plastic dummies, where presumably they can be pushed and pinned into shape, they looked grim.

Onward. A promising Chanel-type jacket with a pretty border in knitted cotton. I tried it on. No tailoring. Floppy material. I took it off.

Past rows of baggy sweaters. I had bought a couple earlier in the season, tempted by the deep scarlet and rich purple. But they turned out to be shapeless and baggy, too, so I can't pretend I have worn them more than once. Now the colours left in the store are far too violent and bright, or some sort of beige or grey.

Maybe the jumpers, the M&S-signature cashmere, would cheer me up. For there was a time – I believe under Sir Stuart Rose – when M&S was renowned for a rainbow collection of classic V-necked cashmere woollies in every colour, with just enough luxurious clinging softness to flatter any figure. They were so tempting and so cheap that we each bought a handful. Not any more. All I could find were big, baggy sweaters in boring colours for nearly 70 a pop.Offer hermes handbags, fashion birkin handbags and other styles hermes handbags. So I resisted.

When M&S tries to be trendy, it's usually in the Per Una range,Browse Men's authentic Louis Vuitton Shoes Personalized Products. but although I searched through that, and the Limited Collection, all I found was rack upon rack of drab, frumpy clothes. All the fabrics were so unappealing, not just in colour, but nasty to touch. Maybe I'm too picky. Given that I have to stand up in front of audiences or cameras, I need dresses and jackets with a touch of glamour, sharp tailoring, plain colours, fake fur at the throat and cuff, a detail to delight, perhaps a jewelled collar or a pretty belt. But even without cameras,Baby Moncler, authentic moncler coats, 2011 Moncler. we mature women all like a touch of glamour, and it just wasn't there.

Nineteen-year-old Alyssa Byrne of Petaluma was found near a snow bank by a utility worker on Friday.

Byrne had attended a music festival and may have tried to walk three miles in freezing weather to her hotel in Stateline, Nev.

El Dorado County Sheriff's Lt. Pete Van Arnum told the Press Democrat of Santa Rosa in a story Monday that Byrne's boot prints suggested disorientation. Authorities do not suspect foul play or suicide.

They will try to determine if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

They were armed with a handgun and pepper spray.

Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj brought their two-diva show to TV critics Tuesday in Pasadena, Calif.

And it was everything you'd want from an act that's probably sorely needed to drum up interest in Fox's “American Idol,” which launches its 12th season Jan. 16 with Carey, Minaj, Randy Jackson and Keith Urban - who'll be lucky if he gets a word in edgewise - at the judges' table.

Both women wore Louboutins, though Minaj's heels appeared to be a half-inch or so higher than Carey's.2012 Garmin Cycling Components. Minaj's hair du jour was a relatively conservative jet black (though a preview of the auditions I saw Monday night suggests she'll roll out her entire wig collection before the season's done).

Carey wore a strapless green cocktail dress and bling at the neck, ears and wrist, Minaj a short print dress in neutral colors and very bright pink lipstick.

Urban went casual in jeans and a leather jacket, Jackson wore black atop some shoes that defy my meager powers of description (he later told me, enthusiastically, that they were Prada).

The body language was classic: Minaj mostly kept her logs crossed in the opposite direction of Carey, who crossed hers demurely at the ankles.
And, oh, yeah, they both talked some (though Carey apologized for being a little raspy from a sinus infection).

Asked about the reports of a feud between the two women, Carey said,Most people only dream of owning a prada bags. “The fighting is what it is. This is ‘American Idol.' It's bigger than all that. It's bigger than some stupid trumped-up thing.”

Asked if each could say something nice about the other (because, yeah, we do therapy here, too), Minaj replied, “I say nice things about Mariah all the time..Find RadioShack Cycling and running devices, heart rate monitors ..She's one of my favorite artists of all time. And I think she's really shaped a generation of singers.”

When Carey's turn came, she said, “That was obviously a very sweet thing to say,” and then observed that the two had worked together once early in Minaj's career and that “I did feel that she was going to go very far.”

I mean, “Nashville” writers couldn't have scripted a scene between Connie Britton and Hayden Panettiere any better.

Afterward, Fox “reality” chief Mike Darnell denied that “Idol's” frequent, judge-driven controversies are staged for ratings -- or that they overshadow the comptition.

“There's nothing to talk about but the judges yet, because you don't know the talent,” he said.

And speaking of the talent: If your name's not Carrie Underwood or Kelly Clarkson, don't expect winning “Idol” to keep your name permanently on the tip of anyone's tongue.

The cycle of fashion may be fickle but it also loves a rerun, so while you're shopping at the sales for king-size bed sheets and half-price slow cookers keep an eye on the clothing racks, too. When it comes to 2013, the best trends have more to do with recycling and Renaissance than the Next Big Thing.

THE POWER OF PANTONE

Every September, Pantone delivers a report outlining the most influential colours for the year ahead.

Based on research they conduct during the spring-summer collections, analysts study shoes and bags looking for colour patterns much like scientists collide atoms to discover new particles. The Pantone philosophy accepts that the "Colour of the Year" on the runway will trickle down through all areas of design.

Last year's colour was Tangerine Tango - more specifically, Pantone 17-1463 - a particularly bright shade of orange that appeared on everything from swimsuits to small cars.voguejacket In 2013, it's all about Monaco Blue (Pantone 19-3964), a royal navy similar to the sash worn by Queen Elizabeth II in her coronation portrait. The executive director of the Pantone Colour Institute, Leatrice Eiseman, explains the choice: "We're constantly seeking out balance in life. We seek it in our diets, in exercise; but we don't always think of colour as a way of finding it. Spring 2013 is about novel neutrals and the balance between light and bright. Monaco Blue isn't a solemn navy; it has a cheeriness attached to it . . . it's a wonderful, anchoring, calm colour.buy christian louboutin"

In a time of persistent economic uncertainty, a pregnant princess and a people's president, the idea that consumers are seeking balance seems spot on. When it comes to your wardrobe, however, all you really need to know is that navy is the new black.SAXO BANK Cycling

WHITE-COLLAR CASUAL

Political commentator Bill Maher likened Barack Obama to "Chocolate Jesus", but a large part of the President's popularity has less to do with being a modern-day deity and more to do with the way he rolls his shirtsleeves. Study photos from the recent campaign and you'll notice Obama is always wearing a suit. You never saw him in the politicians "working man" uniform of pressed jeans and checked, collared shirt. Obama won the race by dressing for the job he wanted to keep. He looked the Leader of the Free World at all times, and his interpretation of casual - no tie with a jacket; or tie, no jacket and rolled sleeves; has become a growing trend.

White-collar casual will see the return of sharp tailoring and classics such as dark and flannel grey suits, white tie on white shirt and yes, calm and balanced Monaco Blue. Key to this look is the Obama Roll: the President rolls his sleeves in even folds to midway up his forearm (never higher) to reveal the chronograph watch given to him as a gift by the Secret Service.LIVESTRONG Cycling

The look is also getting a more regal interpretation via the wardrobes of princes Harry and Charles, both of whom made it on to GQ magazine's best dressed for 2012. (Poor William didn't get a look in.) The young prince is bringing a distinctly American flavour to his father's love of traditional British tailoring, and as a result you'll also see lots of navy sports jackets (yes, with gold buttons) and camel and grey crew-neck cashmere jumpers over white-collared shirts in 2013.SKY Cycling

Sarah Chapa is a senior at Texas A&M University-Kingsville majoring in fashion and interior merchandising and business and the president of the Fashion and Interiors Merchandising Group.LIVESTRONG Cycling Her time at school is not all work though. She is also currently serving as Miss Texas A&M University-Kingsville and as the winner of the pageant and accompanying scholarship, she also has spent the year representing the university at various functions. She really enjoys finding just the right outfit for the occasion. She said she’s passionate about fashion and believes it is a fun way to express her personality.

I wouldn't be caught dead wearing: fur boots with shorts. I do not think that they balance each other well.

My most embarrassing fashion mishap/wardrobe malfunction: is probably just forgetting to take the tags off clothing and walking around with them on all day.

Three accessories women definitely need are: scarves, jewelry and handbags. These three items can tie in colors, make colors pop and transform an outfit.

The worst fashion advice I ever received: is to copy outfits from magazines. I believe in getting inspired by ideas you see but not copying. You should take an outfit and put your own unique spin on things.

My big fashion influences are: Kourtney Kardashian and Lauren Conrad. Kourtney looks good in everything she wears, and Lauren knows how to be comfortable but chic.

I'll never throw out my: solid colored shirts. They are timeless and you can always dress them up with accessories.

My best fashion steal to date: a Marc Jacobs bag that was originally $400 that I bought for $200 in Los Angeles. Sometimes you just have to be patient, enjoy shopping and look around for the best deals.

I'm currently in search of: boots. Winter is such a great time for buying boots: riding boots, ankle boots or Ugg Boots.

My favorite pieces of jewelry are: Betsey Johnson necklaces.SAXO BANK Cycling I love these pieces because they are all so unique and make a statement.

I have an impressive collection of: scarves have actually become an obsession of mine. I think they can tie in colors on your outfit and look classy and mature.

When I shop for clothes: I buy outfits, accessories and all. I believe that it allows you to buy an outfit and make it perfect since you have everything you need for it.

I have a tough time shopping for: handbags. I am very picky about size and color when it comes to handbags.

My favorite designers include: Alexander McQueen, Marc Jacobs, Vera Wang, Coco Chanel and Betsey Johnson.

I have a fashion addiction for: boots. I currently have fifteen pairs of boots. I believe they go great with outfits, and you can never have too many shoes.

I can't live without my: memorial bracelet. No matter what I wear, from formal dresses to casual wear, buy christian louboutin I never take it off. It is in honor of Lance Cpl. Colton Wesley Rusk, with whom I grew up and who was killed in action in December 2010. It means so much to me that I ignore the rules of fashion, so even though it may not match my outfits perfectly it means something to me.

The best way to organize your closet is: I organize my closet by style; tank tops, short sleeved shirts, long sleeved shirts, tunics, dresses, and jackets. I always look into do it yourself projects for organizing tips.

There will always be space in my closet for: any kind of apparel or accessories. You can never have too many clothes, just too small of a closet to put them in.

The most comfortable item in my closet: leggings. I have so many pairs of leggings. You can dress them up while still feeling super comfortable.

When I'm at home, I love to wear: Victoria's Secret yoga pants and hoodies. They are super comfortable but still fashionable.

The only thing I dislike about shopping is: bad customer service at stores. It can ruin a fun day of shopping.

I save lots of money on fashion by: being patient and always taking advantage of sales, especially online.

To keep ahead of the fashion game, I: constantly look for inspiration. I also always look for the latest trends on fashion blogs and magazines.

I enjoy dressing up most for: my Miss Texas A&M University-Kingsville events. I get to wear formal dresses, cocktail dresses and cute business outfits.SKY Cycling It is the one time I can go all out and look like a princess. What girl wouldn't want to accessorize with a tiara?

My best fitting jeans: Francesca's denim and Ann Taylor Loft.voguejacket The Loft has petite sizes, so they fit perfectly.

One of my shopping quirks: I love to shop alone. Most people take friends or family, but I love to take my time and enjoy the alone time.

My favorite color to wear is: black. It is classic and really makes accessories pop.

My co-workers often tell me: I shop too much and usually don't wear the same thing twice.

A Danish drama popular here throws into high relief the huge gap between the two countries, writes Lesley Riddoch

Borgen continues to mystify many British men. Why on earth are nearly a million (mostly women) wasting Saturday nights watching a subtitled chunk of complex Danish politics charting the fictional trials and tribulations of Birgitte Nyborg – an idealistic socialist-green who unexpectedly becomes Denmark's first female prime minister?

Viewing figures for the first instalment of series two aren't yet available – but Saturday's night's audience is bound to be up on the 629,000 who watched the start of the first series this time last year. That inaugural Borgen in turn eclipsed the debut episode of the Danish Broadcasting Corporation's first UK offering, The Killing, whose regular audience was 1.8 million by the final BBC4 double-bill at Christmas. The Danish-Swedish co-production The Bridge also netted a million viewers in April 2012. It seems we can't get enough of the quirky, blood-thirsty Danes.

If Borgen is The Killing without killing, it's also Sex in the City without sex, The West Wing without Americans and Xena: Warrior Princess without martial arts (or micro-minis). So what has it got?

According to shadow energy minister Caroline Flint: “Borgen is our bellwether: she holds the line; she makes moral choices. She is tough and ambitious but honest; a million miles from the strident, feminist, over-ambitious woman, and other media shorthands used to demean women in UK public life.”

Ah, but not in Scottish public life, I hear the optimists cry. Nyborg would surely be at home north of the Border where Labour and Tory leaders, the Green co-convener and Alex Salmond's anointed heir are all female. She'd be familiar with the latitude and population size and the wheeler-dealing over votes and coalitions.voguejacket Surely feminist, consensual, northern Scotland could hardly be more Borgen?

But there's the rub. Sadly, Holyrood could no more replicate the plot of this Europe-wide hit than BBC Scotland could have produced it. Borgen is not just the story of one beleaguered woman, lonely and isolated at the top of a macho political heap. The series brims with multi-dimensional, persistent,SKY Cycling believable and fallible female characters, like Katrine, the ambitious young TV journalist and her boss, the formidable Hanne.christian louboutin boots

Just as the Swedish Wallander works because understatement and teamwork are real aspects of Swedish culture,RadioShack Cycling and the British Wallander is unwatchable because these admirable qualities are essentially foreign (witness the machismo, overstatement and violence of the BBC's new Ripper Street), Borgen revolves around believable women because Danish public life revolves around women.

You could make many relevant comparisons between Danish and Scottish life – here are just two. Childcare costs for a month are around 1,SAXO BANK Cycling400 for two toddlers full-time in Edinburgh and 500 in Copenhagen (despite a stronger Danish currency). Thus, more women in Denmark work – 74.4 per cent in 2010 against 65 per cent in Britain. (Figures for men are 79 per cent and 76 per cent respectively.)

The British welfare model puts family support into tax credits, while the Danes put almost the same amount into childcare subsidy instead, to much greater social and economic effect.

A British think-tank, the Resolution Foundation, has calculated that the crippling cost of childcare here means a million women are “missing” from the UK workforce. Could an independent Scotland change this? Ms Sturgeon has named four men to devise a Scottish welfare system, yet Denmark already has what Scotland needs – a strategy consciously aimed at gender equality.

Danish professor Jon Kvist has put it succinctly: “Without high levels of female employment, there's not enough tax income to fund the Danish welfairytale.”

The makers of Borgen (The Bridge and The Killing) use real equality as the springboard for a range of characters, behaviours, dialogues and settings Britain's unequal society cannot convincingly invent. They also tackle subjects deemed too hot to handle or too boring to touch – like the childhood abuse of Birgitte's spin doctor or the stultifying process of picking a new EU commissioner – and breathe new life into both.

The confident handing of difficult plot-lines takes Borgen viewers to a new reality – beyond both weary generalisation and idealistic projection. Birgitte's husband Phillip begins as a patient, talented but increasingly frustrated house-husband and finally files for divorce.
