Vote raises conflict-of-interest questions
Booker T. Washington Community Center has received CDBG funding in the past, and one program was funded this year, said Clifford Porter, executive director. The center received roughly $13,000 for its after-school tutoring program. Although he is upset with the denial of additional funding — which he believes went to benefit Junior Welfare League — Porter is grateful for what his organization received now and in the past.

Keeping time with the Swiss
'Please don't make a noise," says an agitated commuter after we raucously board the train to Zurich. She points to a sign depicting an index finger pressed to lips, and the words Quiet Zone. Not even cellphones and MP3 players with earphones are permitted. We surrender to silence for two hours after leaving the Swiss town of Visp.

Backstage at the Final Four
Championship Monday unfolds similar to semifinals Saturday, with media arriving at the Superdome later in the day. By 6:45 p.m., TV people are bustling around the concourse for the 8:20 tipoff, and everyone in the workroom looks a little extra primped for the final game of the season. Waiting to take the floor, I meet blogger Adam Zagoria from New York, who has longish flyway hair and a sport jacket of designer drape over an untucked button-down. Zag's Blog is known ‘round the workroom for its college basketball recruiting scoops and coverage of the Knicks. And Dan Wolken, a recent print media evacuee who bypassed traditional websites for the Daily, Rupert Murdoch's tablet newspaper venture.

Niche Market | Snaps
Nestor Cortes' foot kicked the lever and the press came down with a bang, forcing a grommet into a thick piece of white stretch fabric. This grommet—a steel ring—fiercely grasping the edges of a round hole in the cloth, was just one of 100 which Cortes would carefully punch into the interior lining of what his client called an "avant garde" jacket. (The holes certainly weren't designed for warmth.) While Cortes worked in a back room crammed with small drawers brimming with snaps, grommets, eyelets (small grommets), jean buttons and decorative rivets of all shapes, material and size, the fashion student waited patiently in the front room, listening to the rhythmic bangs.

Tim Tebow Takes New York; Obama the Bench Coach
In his first press conference as a member of the New York Jets, Tim Tebow was poised, diplomatic, and ferociously positive. This could describe the tenor of every Tebow press conference dating back to his time at the University of Florida, but it was still impressive to watch the most famous backup quarterback on the planet dispatch with loaded questions regarding his relationship with starting quarterback Mark Sanchez and address the comments from Joe Namath last week that his trade was nothing more than a "publicity stunt." When asked to predict the Jets record next season, Tebow declined to get specific, in the process putting everyone in the room on notice that he knows what an obvious trap question looks like. So on the whole, he did well. We would have liked it if someone asked where he planned on living and what he was excited about doing in the Tristate area, but those queries will probably be addressed at a later date. This was more of a 30 minute feeling out session. [The Fifth Down]
This is good news: New York Yankees pitcher Joba Chamberlain has been released from a Tampa hospital after suffering a ghastly, potentially career-ending "open fracture" of his right ankle on Thursday, while horsing around with his son on a trampoline. Doctors are will continue to monitor Chamberlain's wound, but apparently are confident he's no longer at risk of suffering an infection in the bone. For his part, Yankees manager Joe Girardi now says he's "optimistic" that Chamberlain will pitch for the team this year.

The rise of the Pakistani middle class: International brands compete for Faisalabad's attention
Most of the sales of branded clothing and jewellery is taking place through franchises that have bought the right to sell these products to consumers in Faisalabad. The demand for these products is fuelled by the vast segment of the middle class that can afford to buy global brands but not necessarily to fly out to Dubai – or even to Karachi and Lahore – to buy them.
A series of interviews conducted by The Express Tribune, both amongst consumers and retail managers, suggests a voracious and growing appetite for branded clothing lines. And it seems that the economic slowdown has done nothing to decrease sales in this segment of the market.
