Russell Clausell, the president of the Southeast Alabama Coalition for the Homeless (SEACH), said they hold a homeless stand down twice a year, which coincides with the changing of the seasons in May and November.
“The season is changing and we have individuals living outdoors and in houses without utilities,” Clausell said. “We want to make sure they have adequate gear and clothing as the seasons change. We also want to let them know we care. The stand downs are very important when it comes to making sure we get the individuals into a more suitable living environment.”
The coalition held its fall stand down on Saturday at the Alfred Saliba Family Service Center.
They have a lawyer on hand for legal advice, along with a nurse to give out medical information and referrals. The homeless can also get a free hair cut while at the homeless stand down.
“The actual driving force is that they'll be able to come in and get clothing and food that they can take with them,” Clausell said. “We also give them a survey to see what their greater needs are, and we'll try to follow up with them and direct them to another agency to get their needs met.”
There are representatives from some of the local agencies that help the homeless at the stand downs like Love in Action International Ministries, the Dothan Rescue Mission and the Mama Tina's Mission House , among others.
“We want the community to be aware that there is a homeless problem in the Dothan and surrounding area,” Clausell said. “One of the biggest problems we're experiencing is a lack of affordable housing. Sometimes some of the people don't qualify for the lower income housing and run into problems.”
Tina Glasgow, with Mama Tina's Mission House, said they provide food, clothes and shelter if they have room. She said they provide a sack lunch from noon to 1 p.m. and a hot meal from 5 to 6 p.m. Monday to Friday at their 605 N. Alice St. location in Dothan.
She said they open from 11 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. for people who need clothing or food.
“If anybody is hungry, we'll feed them ,” Glasgow said. “ We're not going to turn anybody away even it's not the feeding time. We have a restoration house, but it's mainly for men.It was a long walk to get here, but at least I'll be brief: I'm shop moncler jackets Darkslatebluem a writer. We believe in restoration instead of incarceration depending on the crime committed. If there's somebody that needs a place to stay for a couple of nights and we have room, we'll house them. But right now it's full. We can house six people.”
Glasgow said the mission house started through a vision her son, Kenneth Glasgow, had to help get people get off the street. She said the mission house's vision was based on scripture from book of Matthew in the Bible.
“It's just to do God's work for the least of them,” Tina Glasgow said.
Ken Tuck, the president of Love in Action International Ministries, said they work to provide spiritual help through Bible study and Celebrate Recovery, a program for “people with hurts, habits and hang ups.”
