Two men are being credited for helping save another man from drowning at Philpott Lake this past weekend.
According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, who oversees the lake, a man was swimming after a beach ball on Sunday, near Bowens Creek beach. However, the ball kept staying out of his reach. The man eventually got tired, and started having problems swimming.
Another man in a nearby boat, and a man in a truck at the boat ramp saw the man having trouble, and tossed a seat cushion, along with life jackets to the man. However, the struggling swimmer could not reach the flotation devices.
The man in the boat then jumped in the water to help. He grabbed the seat cushion, and swam toward the struggler swimmer, pushing the cushion for the man to grab. The second man in the truck then got in the water, and both men helped the struggling swimmer back to shore.
Earl Wright, Philpott Lake's Assistant Operations Project Manager, witnessed the rescue while on patrol. "I figured he was going to get into trouble," said Wright, in a news release, "because one of rules of water safety is 'Reach, Throw, Row, but don't Go!" However, everything turned out OK.
On Monday, Army Corps of Engineers went to shake the rescuers' hands. One of the men, who asked not to be named, said they learned what to do from his First Aid, CPR, and Boat Operator training courses.
"The things we teach in our water safety education are stored in your brain somewhere, ready to be used when the need arises. It worked perfectly in this case!" noted Craig Rockwell with the Corps.
Two men were rescued from Lake Michigan Tuesday afternoon after their boat began sinking about 12 miles northeast of Two Rivers, the U.S. Coast Guard reported.
Their 46-foot vessel was reported to be sinking shortly after 2:30 p.m. The two men both were wearing life jackets. Bilge pumps on the boat had failed, causing it to take on water, the Coast Guard said.
