More than 500,000 shoe buyers will receive a portion of a settlement from the shoe manufacturer Sketchers in the next month.

The company agreed to refund 40 million dollars to customers who bought Shape-ups shoes. The FTC and other consumer watch groups accused Sketchers of misleading advertising claims that the shoes would help the wearer lose weight.

A Branson store owner, Merriam Merrifield, said she had heard from friends that the shoes were comfortable.

"When I went to the store and tried them on," she said, "I loved them."

But things changed when Merrifield began experiencing a pain in her ankles, and hadn't gotten the results she wanted after six months of wearing the shoes.

"I say it's very deceiving," she said.

Eventually, Merrifield had to have surgery on her ankles because of damaged ligaments. Whether the round-bottom shoes were to blame is debatable, but she said she will non longer take any chances.Find a great selection of christian louboutin boots deals ! Click on any of the links below.

"I cannot do no exercise whatsoever," Merrifield said. "I cannot walk for any distance at all.Save on Christian Louboutin Pump! All the Sales, All in One Place."

Merrifield said she would not receive a portion of the settlement because doing so would forfeit any insurance assistance she could get for her ankle surgery.

Dr. John Roller, a podiatrist in Hollister, said no footwear offers miraculous fitness benefits.

"Shoes can make a difference whether or not you're going to be active," he said. "That's the only way a shoe can help you. There's no secret, magical design that's going to be able to help."

Roller said he often recommends rocker-bottom shoes to his patients to help with joint and back pain, but that he did not advocate for a specific brand.

"That rounded soul can replace some of the need for flexion in your feet and ankles," he said.

Some of the claims Sketchers made in its ads included statements such as, "You'll turn your workout into part of your everyday life, without ever going to the gym," and "Shoes with a different fit to make you more fit, healthier and, yes, welcome to michaels kors bags on sale, best service and low prices. happier."
