"We do all this because we want Penang's artists and craftsman to be inspired when they see what their Singaporean counterparts have done and accomplished.

"This has generated a lot of interest and there are proposals and queries for this shop house to be opened for other similar events ... like Jakarta House or Kuala Lumpur House," said McMurtrie.

Singapore House opens from noon to 9pm from Thursday to Sunday until Sunday when the four-week George Town Festival 2013 ends.

After that, the premises will continue to host various artistic events from time to time as an extension to McMurtrie's China House a few doors away, a cafe that also doubles as an art house.

McMurtrie said there were several plans on the drawing board, such as organising a "Penang Antique House," art and photography exhibition.

"We have the space so it is a matter of getting people to come together.

"From the George Town Festival, we can see that youth are very involved in making art and cultural events here a success.

"They are showing us that there is continuity in Penang's rich culture and diversity," she said.
