It was a student — one he hadn’t seen in 36 years.

The 67-year-old acknowledged back-to-school nights at East have become more like back-in-time sessions for him. Many of his former students are now seeing their sons and daughters graduate.
O’Breza spent most of his career at Cherry Hill East. But the Ohio native landed his first teaching job at Cherry Hill West in 1968, after earning a master’s degree at Temple University. He was hired after completing a summer internship at East.
O’Breza cited a number of former teachers and professors as his inspiration to become an educator. But beyond his motivation to teach, he always saw himself as a “person of service.”
“My goal was to have meaningful work,” O’Breza explained. “Some teachers think lesson plans are just ordinary, but you never know what type of influence you can have on a student.”
Superintendent Maureen Reusche said O’Breza earned the respect of generations of students. She described him as an outstanding instructional leader and a mentor to teachers and administrators alike.
“Many, many students and colleagues have benefitted from his presence here,” she added. “His are big shoes to fill indeed.”
The district has not yet named a successor to O’Breza, who has led East for 12 years.
An article about O’Breza’s retirement appeared in the Eastside, the Cherry Hill High School East newspaper. The paper’s editors shared a heartfelt goodbye to their principal.

O’Breza taught just about every level at East, from advanced placement to remedial. Sitting in his office Monday, the tall but soft-spoken O’Breza said he enjoyed the balance of teaching at both ends of the learning spectrum.
“You had students who couldn’t get enough of the material to those that struggled and had no interest in reading or writing.”
O’Breza admitted to missing his time in the classroom as he moved up the administrative ranks.
“You miss seeing students development over time. You can’t replace that experience.”
O’Breza also served as an assistant principal and in guidance before finding a home as principal at East. He will see his final East class graduate today, and his last day in the district is July 31.
In retirement, O’Breza plans to travel with his wife Barbara. They have one son who lives in China.
“Being a principal is a 24/7 job and I loved it all,” he acknowledged. “Just some quiet time and reflection that would be fine for now.
“But you know what they say, leap and the net will appear.”
