Awaiting Milwaukeeans this weekend is a bigger and broader — but still authentic — Polish Fest, which hopes to attract nearly 40,000 people this year from across the nation, thanks to the fest's partnership with Summerfest's Rock 'n Sole Run on Saturday.

The annual festival, which starts at noon Friday, celebrates the mesh of Milwaukee's Polish history and modern heritage.

Back from a one-year hiatus are The Big Boomski fireworks, courtesy of sponsors Planners Financial Group. The show blasts off Saturday at 10:30 p.m. after Polish Fest shares the festival grounds with the Rock 'n Sole Run's post-race party. All runners are invited to attend the fest afterward.

The Cultural Village will feature cooking demonstrations by local people with a Polish background, who will make traditional dishes such as Polish sausage and pierogis.

On display from the Polish Center of Wisconsin are authentic Polish folk costumes, courtesy of Ada Dziewanowska's private collection. Dziewanowska served as artistic director and choreographer of the Syrenka Polish Folk Dance Ensemble of Milwaukee and authored the book "Polish Folk Dances & Songs — A Step-by-Step Guide."

Jane Best, executive director of Polish Fest, said there will be new vendors in the Polish marketplace who have spent the last two months gathering their inventory from abroad. Expect an assortment of authentic dry goods, spices, drink mixes, team jerseys and sweatshirts.

The Sobieski-sponsored vodka tasting and vodka lounge return for the third year and make for a chill place to enjoy an array of musical entertainment that is more than just polka, Best said.

Milwaukee Archbishop Jerome Listecki will celebrate Mass at 10:15 a.m. Sunday in the Cultural Stage Pavilion. Readings and music will be in Polish and English.

A deputy with the Lincoln County Sheriff's Department had shoes thrown at him while responding to a domestic dispute between siblings, the department said Wednesday.

According to Lt. Andy Binder, a sheriff's department spokesman, the incident occurred in the 100 Block of Country View Drive in Foley, Missouri.
