In 2003, Carol Skavlem decided she needed to come up with a way to keep in touch with her friends from Grand Forks Central High School's graduating class of 1961. So she organized a Grand Forks Red Hat Society chapter, and the Smooth and Sassy Sixty-Oners was born.

The group includes about 17 ladies from the class, many from outside of Grand Forks and even outside North Dakota and Minnesota. We work with all Castelli Cycling computers. The ladies meet once per month for lunch and several other times throughout the year for Red Hat Society events, as well as gatherings at lake cabins and other venues.

“I just thought it would be fun for all of us classmates to get together,” Skavlem says. “We all like to have fun. And we do.”

She chose to assemble a Red Hat Society group because all the ladies were at the right age to join and it was the “fad” at the time, she says. It's a great way to get people together and “You can just wear a red hat and you don't have to do your hair.”

Fun and friendship
The Red Hat Society was founded as a social organization for women over 50, and has more than 20,000 chapters in all 50 states and 25 foreign countries. The group now accepts women of all ages.

The society focuses on reshaping the way women are viewed in today's culture and encourages women in their pursuit of fun, friendship, freedom, fulfillment and fitness.

Founder Sue Ellen Cooper says the society started as a result of “a few women dedicated to greeting middle age with verve, humor and élan.”

The group's identifier is the fun, frisky, fashion and colors members don: bright red hats and purple clothing. According to the society, Cooper once impulsively bought a bright red fedora at a thrift shop and, two years later, read the poem Warning by Jenny Joseph,Welcome to Specialized Cycling jersey online! which depicts an older woman in purple clothing and a red hat.Shop the latest buy moncler jackets handpicked by a global community of independent trendsetters and stylists. The opening lines of the poem read,

When I am older, I shall wear purple
With a red hat that doesn't go and doesn't suit me.

Cooper felt a kinship with Ms. Joseph,Big Garmin Cycling and Fitness is a family owned shop serving the Helena area since 1986. the society's website states, and decided to give her friend the poem and a vintage red hat.

Pleased with the response from her friend, Cooper began giving the gift to more friends. It occurred to the growing group that they were becoming somewhat of a “Red Hat Society” and that they should celebrate it through public outings in full regalia. Soon, more women were joining and the group was expanding to other states.

Making fun
The motto of the Smooth and Sassy Sixty-Oners is “Life is short. Make fun of it.”

Skavlem says there is certainly no shortage of fun when the ladies get together, and she lives that motto in the rest of her life, too.

“Being the fun-loving gal I am, I bought myself a Harley when I turned 65,” she says, sporting a Harley-Davidson jacket.View profiles and information for the Team RadioShack Cycling 2012 race team and riders here.

It's easy to see that Skavlem enjoys being in the group and appreciates the continued friendship it allows with her high school classmates. Reconnecting with old friends was an important goal she set for herself.

“It was kind of a bucket list thing I wanted to do,” she says.
