You might think it a fairly strange idea that the level of technology will change the way men dress. But it has happened often enough in the past and I see no reason why it might not happen again. The tails of a morning suit are the remnants of the long tails of a riding coat. They disappeared from everyday life when men no longer rode horses but rather cars where such tails are a distinct hindrance. The idea of male purses (outside Italy that is) has never really taken off although men for a long time did carry canes or walking sticks. Both are, at least I presume they are, hangovers of a time when men carried a sword and liked to have their hands free to use one.

A possible answer to this is of course a change in the size of pockets.

There is, as MB points out, something of a gender difference here. Women do tend to carry purses or handbags and men do not. There is thus a difference in the form factor of an electronic gizmo that already suits each gender differently. Something like the iPad requires a proper carrying case or backpack, clearly a smartphone or iPhone can be carried in the male pocket (the breast pocket on a jacket seems a favourite) or in the female handbag. But that larger form, the Galaxy Note for example or the phablet, doesn't fit well with the current male dress code while it coexists quite happily with the female penchant for carrying a bag anyway.

Please note that this is all on average, of course: the existence of women who do not carry bags or men who do does not alter that on average the above is true.

However, for reasons of ease of use rather than ease of carrying the larger form factor of the phablet has obvious advantages. At least it does to the fat fingered and short sighted like me. Which is what leads me to the rumination that it might be men's tailoring which changes to enable the easy carrying of the larger sized gizmo.

As I've said, the iPad in its current size just isn't going to be slipped into pockets. But it's possible that the phablet could be. If it were the inside pocket of a standard suit jacket it would require a few alterations to how such jackets were cut. But not much, just enough to make sure that the weight on one side did not pull the jacket over to that side.

But there's another alternative possible, one that would make even more sense. That's the return of the waistcoat (what you Americans call a vest). This has advantages over the jacket: it does not swing loose, so that the weight will not bang against the body. Similarly given that the waistcoat is worn buttoned up will mean less re-engineering will be necessary of the garment itself. All that is needed is a pocket large enough to hold that medium sized form factor.

And of course waistcoats can be worn with jeans, over t-shirts, formal shirts, with or without a jacket: I think it has all the advantages. Essentially the garment becomes another set of pockets in which we can carry our now usefully sized electronic shiny shinies.
